22 - 25 May 2025

CoBrA GALLERY is pleased to announce its participation in 2025 ART021 BEIJING, where we will be presenting the work of six artists and designers from 22 to 25 May 2025 at TANK 79 & THE FIRST WORKSHOP BEITING 798•751 COMMUNITY.

With the theme of ‘Uselessness’, Cobra Gallery brings together a number of artists and designers from different cultural backgrounds - Ma Kelu, Huang Saifeng, Zhang Ning, Yuan Huinan, Zhao Zihan, Comité de Proyectos - to explore the boundaries of ‘function’ and ‘beauty’ through paintings, sculptures, installations, and designs, and to inspire freedom of perception, emotion, and thought in seemingly ‘useless’ forms. Through paintings, sculptures, installations and designs, they explore the boundaries between ‘function’ and ‘beauty’, and stimulate the freedom of perception, emotion and thinking in seemingly ‘useless’ forms.

 -

From Ma Kelu's abstract practice to Zhao Zihan and Comité de Proyectos' exploration of “de-functionalisation of design”; from Yuan Huinan's delicate portrayal of nature to Zhang Ning and Huang Saifeng's reconstruction of space and form - these works are not for a specific purpose, but for a specific purpose. These works are devoid of a clear purpose, but evoke a renewed understanding of the nature of existence, time and aesthetics. In Useless Uses, ‘useless’ is no longer a discarded object, but points to a deeper dimension of perception, a free expression that goes straight to the heart.

 -

In this exhibition, the works are no longer ‘used’, they become fascinating ‘suspended objects’ - waiting to be seen and resonated with. They are an escape from utility, a tribute to spiritual freedom, and a gentle but firm refusal: we refuse to be defined by utility in our lives.
