Zhao Yu is an artist and writer, currently living and working between Shanghai and Paris. She holds both a Bachelor’s (DNAP) and Master’s (DNSAP) degree from the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris, France.
Her practice focuses on transforming the perspective of “self-culture” into that of “other-culture,” situating it within deep temporal and spatial frameworks. She works across multiple media—including image, video, writing, and installation—to translate these concepts. Drawing from personal experience and mobility, Zhao reconstructs scenes using elements from semiotics, literature, and related social sciences, revealing the circulation of civilizations and cultural transformations on a global scale. From this process emerges a “new” narrator, who, in the guise of an intruder, questions historical truths and explores the complex relationships between original and replica.
