Born in Linyi, Shandong in 1983, Zhang Ning graduated from the Sculpture Department of the Fine Arts College Shanghai Normal University in 2005, and now lives and works in Shanghai.
A distinctive figure among Chinese sculptors of the post-1980s generation, Ning’s practice centres on exploring the language of sculpture itself, using sculpture as a vessel for perceptions and insights drawn from lived experience. In recent years, his works have shown clear experiments and breakthroughs in sculptural language, spatial expression, and the use of new materials, expanding the context of his earlier practice.
His work consistently engages with poetic and symbolic themes and is imbued with a vigorous, uplifting spiritual force.
