Chen Qiang, born in 1960 in Hunan, China, graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at East China Normal University in Shanghai in 1989. He currently lives and works in Shanghai. As one of the leading figures in Shanghai’s abstract painting scene, Chen Qiang has been dedicated to constructing his own unique abstract artistic universe. His works combine Eastern and Western artistic processes—including the use of traditional Chinese xuan paper and ink alongside Western linen and paint—and layer rationality with emotion, revealing a direct confrontation with inner conflicts and struggles, as well as a profound understanding of the essence of life.
