Yao Bangliang

Yao Bangliang’s artistic practice has always revolved around the characteristics of “lacquer.” He focuses not only on the material’s visual effects but also on the structural and spatial potential inherent in lacquer as a medium. Since earning his master’s degree from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, he has long experimented and created using natural lacquer as his primary medium, gradually moving from the logic of two-dimensional painting toward more spatial forms of expression. While the surfaces of his works appear simple at first glance, beneath the layered lacquer surfaces lie complex craftsmanship and thought processes.
